"I am so used to hearing about innovation in journalism that when I first heard about the Innovation Journalism program at Stanford, I assumed that's what it focused on. Not exactly.

The VINNOVA-Stanford Research Center of Innovation Journalism actually focused on helping journalists cover the field of innovation. David Nordfors, a Swedish punk rocker-turned-molecular-physicist-turned-journalist, found that journalists were stuck in silos of "business journalism" and "technology journalism" and couldn't see the big picture of innovation.

In 2003, Nordfors started the Innovation Journalism program, bringing mid-career journalists from around the world to Stanford University as fellows. They were placed in San Francisco Bay Area newsrooms to learn the new ways that reporters and bloggers were covering technology and innovation. Those newsrooms include the Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, CNET and even the Technologizer blog. There's also an annual Conference on Innovation Journalism at Stanford, where the fellows present their work and discuss related topics.

While the program was set up to help journalists do a better job of covering the topic of innovation, there is now a need for journalists to do a better job of covering innovation in journalism itself. Nordfors told me that journalists charged with covering the media are good practitioners of innovation journalism, because they are mixing business, technology, lifestyle and political journalism in one beat. He stresses that journalists need to break out of their silos and go across disciplines for better coverage of innovation.

I recently sat down with Nordfors at Stanford to talk about the Innovation Journalism program, and get his take on the current state of journalism, and how media companies -- and even journalism schools -- need to change. The following is an edited transcript of our conversation, including audio and video clips. "

Journalism is vital to the innovation environment

In autumn 2003, when David Nordfors googled "Innovation Journalism", he got zero relevant results.

Instead, he got plenty of results concerning technology, science, and economy.

"I was interested in combining these fields from a journalistic perspective. I was actually quite surprised to learn that nobody had used the term innovation journalism before," says Nordfors, who has led the Innovation Journalism Program at Stanford University since 2004.

The program is financed by Vinnova, the Swedish Government Agency for Innovation Systems, but Nordfors created the concept himself and is full of enthusiasm.

"There is a wide gap between business and technology journalism. Often, one journalist would not even understand what the other was saying, and neither of them understood what innovations were all about," he says.

Innovation journalism seeks to combine economic, technological, and political journalism, and to represent innovation as the foundation for economic success. According to Nordfors, it is in the interests of every nation that journalists understand the function of an innovation ecosystem and are able to communicate it to people.

Active Finnish participation

The concept of innovation journalism has gradually started to flourish among both editors and researchers. Business reporter Jyrki Alkio, from the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, was the first Finn to participate in the Innovation Journalism Program in spring 2006. Postdoctoral researcher Turo Uskali, from the University of Jyväskylä, finished his one-year stay at Stanford in June.

"It was a unique experience to be involved in the creation of a new area of education and research. The content of the program is very similar to my view of how journalism should be developed, which had an impact on my motivation to go to Stanford," he says.

Uskali thinks that it is vital for journalism to experiment with new things, break boundaries, and cooperate with journalists from different countries and cultures. He received support for his visit from Tekes and the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation and says that he is happy to see how Finnish media companies and universities have joined the development of innovation journalism with great enthusiasm.

More than twenty Finnish researchers and journalists attended the Fourth Conference on Innovation Journalism organized at Stanford in May. The first in its field, the Finnish Society for Innovation Journalism was established in February 2007.

"It is wonderful to see how the concept is spreading in the world. Society cannot study and discuss the innovation system unless independent journalism tells us about it," Nordfors says.

The speech was made on thursday June 14 at the regional innovation journalism conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The conference, a part of the Slovenian innovation journalism initiative, was arranged by Vibacom, the company founded by Violeta Bulc, who is spearheading the introduction of the injo concept in Slovenia.

As Potocnik refers to in his speech, in February I had the pleasure of a one-on-one with him in Brussels. Violeta and John Hagard, Swedish ambassador to Slovenia, had raised his interest in injo, leading up to an invitation to me to go to Brussels and tell him more about it.

Brunell and Nordfors attacked in an earlier op-ed the Swedish government proposal for a national terrestrial digital TV network, claiming the government should put emphasis on developing Internet networking competence in Sweden, instead of building new TV networks on which it can control the content.

Arvedahl, VP of Teracom, the government owned company that was designed to own the terestrial digital TV network, answers: Brunell and Nordfors have misunderstood. The digital TV network is what people need. Will also carry the Internet.
